APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP

It is great pleasure to welcome you to St George’s and we look forward to getting to know you better and serving you in whichever way we can.  We likewise look forward to the gifts you will bring to us – both in your friendship, and in the skills and time you are able to share with us.  Your presence adds value to this community, and we appreciate your membership and participation.

St George’s was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and the first part of the church building was completed in 1904.  We have a long and distinguished history which has followed the evolution of the Anglican Church within the wider Southern African milieu. The personality of St George’s is exhibited in the spiritual richness of the liturgy and the symbols of our heritage. We accentuate the role of music and consistently strive to raise its art in worship. Our preaching and teaching is current and progressive in its interpretation of Christian theology. We therefore prioritise hospitality to a variety of approaches to Christian faith and practice, all the while basing our primary character on the love of God in Jesus Christ.  It is therefore our conviction that the Holy Spirit calls us to love without prejudice as we seek to engage meaningfully and sensibly with the challenges of the twenty first century. An intentional engagement with this progress is integral to our identity and is reflected in our Vision Statement:

St. George’s Church seeks to draw diverse people

into its community to encounter God

We are a vibrant and active community and we deploy a wide variety of ministries both within and beyond the church precincts. ROEDEAN

St George’s has been the home church to Roedean since 1914. Inasmuch as Roedean is not a Diocesan School, it is nonetheless constitutionally Anglican and the Rector of St George’s serves as its chaplain. We attend to regular services for both the junior and senior schools and also attend to ceremonial events and services for special occasions, Foundation Day, Speech Night, Valedictory, annual Christmas and Easter Services, Confirmation classes, and pastoral care for the girls and the staff.

TO REALISE AND LIVE OUR UNION WITH GOD IN CHRIST

  • To REALISE means to openly engage all disciplines of human learning, from the rigours of science and evolutionary theory to current trends in philosophy, politics, and the arts, as a means of apprehending and motivating the nature and role of Christianity for the twenty first century.
  • To LIVE in this awareness is to live as Christ in the world through love in holiness and service to the world.
  • In UNION means in physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual oneness with God in all domains of human existence.
  • And we do this with GOD IN CHRIST according to our shared Christian precepts in a spirit of unprejudiced hospitality to the complexities of the world.

Naturally, we also provide for all aspects of ministry pertaining to baptisms, confirmations, and weddings.  Baptisms are generally conducted four or five times a year.  During periods of loss or grief we will gently guide you through the processes of funeral organisation and any necessary counselling.  We also have a beautiful Garden of Remembrance for the interment of ashes. Please do not hesitate to call us if there is anything, we might do to assist you.

More detailed informational brochures and administration forms for all the work listed in this brochure are available from the hospitality desk or from the Parish Secretary’s office.

The significance and scope of all the ministry conducted from St George’s requires efficient and effective management and administration. The beautiful character of the property also requires on-going care and maintenance of the buildings and gardens. We invite you to participate by joining our Church, enjoying all these facilities with us, and sharing in our work
